about

This two track EP sees the first official release by Ôpital.

Ôpital is a collaborative electroacoustic healing & meditation music project initiated as a collaboration between Geneviéve Castrée-Elverum and Gus Franklin in 2015.

At the time of conception, the project was a reaction to a dearth of 'good' new age music available to Geneviéve in her healing & meditation practices, and her wish for the project was for it to be realised quickly as a cassette on the short-lived Anacortes Health & Nutrition music label.

After Geneviéve's untimely death due to Pancreatic Cancer in 2016, I (Gus) took this project and - not so much ran - as walked very slowly with it. Having started numerous processes and ideas towards it in the 12 months before her passing, I took my time enveloped by my grief and loss. Taking time in occasional moments to work with and make this music as a means to connect with her memory, and the memories of my mother Beryl Franklin and another good friend and collaborator; Kate Gane, all of whom were lost all within a 5 year time period.

This two track release is a document of one of those days where I took the time to commune with the memories of these lost loved ones and in particular, my mother, who passed on April 11th, 2015. On this day in 2022 I sat down and spent some time contemplating her memory and allowing it to be made physical through music.

April 11th, 2022 - Part 1 & 2 is created using composition via both generative and algorithmic means. Gentle human manipulations and decisions coming from the contemplative/meditative state work to create slowly breathing synthesis through modular circuits. The addition of processed field recordings and found sounds are woven through the pieces for a further depth of evocation.
